I love flip flops and have MANY pairs. For years, my Mother and others have been telling me that they were bad for your feet, and I have been telling my daughter (but still wearing them – “do as I say, not as I do.”) Then the other day, someone explained to me why they’re bad and why they could be contributing to my back pain. There are other reasons, I’m sure, but this one made a lot of sense to me and will result in me wearing them a lot less (thanks a bunch, Ben!)
Simply put, when you walk barefoot, the way your body is meant to walk, your toes bend up (and are free to adjust to the terrain, etc.) When you wear flip flops, you toes do the opposite and bend down, causing yours knees, hips or lower back to compensate in ways there are not meant to. This often causing pain and other problems (arthritis, inflation, joint issues).
